All eyes are on Hollywood to see if Everything Everywhere All At One is able to sweep the Oscars during this year’s season. The adventure film is the first candidate to win best photography after success in a group of previous groups at the awards ceremony, but it faces competition from two other films. They are All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin.

The first nominees in the acting categories for the Academy Awards are Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh.

And the 2023 awards season was one of the most unpredictable in recent years, with three of the four acting categories very close in contention.

Winners from other major award ceremonies such as the SAG Awards, Baftas, and Golden Globes have varied, and there is a lack of consensus about who will receive the award at the Academy Awards as a result.

Who hosts the Oscars?

American broadcaster Jimmy Kimmel will host the 95th Academy Awards, which will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Jimmy Kimmel last hosted the Oscars in 2018, when film producer Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water won Best Picture for his movie.

This will be the third time the talk show host has hosted the Oscars.

The American comedian may be trying to forget the other occasion in 2017, when the ceremony was thrown into chaos following the announcement of the wrong Best Picture winner.

As part of a publicity stunt at the Dolby Theater on Wednesday, Kimmel joked about how the venue’s red carpet changed color for the first time since 1960.

Referring to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at last year’s Academy Awards, Kimmel said: “People have been asking if there will be any trouble this year, is there going to be any violence this year? I certainly hope not. But If there is, I think the decision to go with a champagne gold carpet instead of a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilled.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to change the color of the rug was made for practical reasons. Which means organizers “can transition more seamlessly from daytime to elegant evening ambiance.”

Who presents the awards during the ceremony?

By tradition, the four previous year’s winners return at the Academy Awards to present their awards to their successors.

This year, three of the 2022 Academy Awards winners are returning – Jessica Chastain, Ariana DeBose and Troy Coutsur – but the fourth winner, Will Smith, will miss the annual tradition due to the decision to ban him from attending the Academy Awards for 10 years.

Other stars presenting this year’s awards include Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, John Travolta, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly and Florence Pugh.

Interestingly, American actress Halle Berry was also invited to attend, and she is still the only non-white woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards, but it is possible that another non-white actress will win the award this year with the presence of Actress Michelle Yeoh.

Other presenters include Paul Dano, Andrew Garfield, Cara Delevingne, Kate Hudson, Michael B. Jordan, Jonathan Majors, Mindy Kaling, Eva Longoria, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Andie MacDowell, and Riz Ahmed.

They will be joined by Antonio Banderas, Elizabeth Banks, Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek Pinault, Melissa McCarthy, Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe, Kostloff, Elizabeth Olsen and Pedro Pascal.

Who are the favorites to win?

Impressively, this year’s winners are the most unpredictable for some time, given the difference in the many preliminary ceremonies.

One thing the critics have faith in, however, is Ke Huy Quan’s ‘Everything Everywhere All At One’ award in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Otherwise, The Will, Brendan Fraser Zelvis, and Austin Butler have each won a bunch of Best Actor awards in other major events and either could win an Academy Award.

Best Supporting Actress is arguably the most open of the acting categories – with a three-way race between Angela Bassett for Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin and Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At One.

Who will win the best picture?

At this point, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the favourite, having won nearly every award it was eligible for – save for the BAFTA.

The British Academy was less interested in the film than the American electorate was, and the BAFTA ceremony gave far more awards to All Quiet on the Western Front.

At the Academy Awards, the World War I epic was the second favorite in the bookmakers to win the top prize, followed by The Banshees of Inisherin.

Best Picture is determined through a preferential ballot in which Academy members are asked to rank the ten nominated films from most to least favorite.

That could mean that a film, which commands emotional support from a relatively small section of the Academy, could lose out to a film that appeals to more voters in general.

For example, a crowd pleaser like Top Gun: Maverick could be a dark horse in the best filmed race due to the large number of second- and third-place votes it would likely receive.

Who performs during the ceremony?

Rihanna will perform at the Academy Awards, exactly one month after her sensational performance at the Super Bowl. She will perform “Lift Me Up” (from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), which was nominated for Best Original Song.

The most likely winner in this category is RRR’s Naatu Naatu, who will be performed by Indian singer Rahul Sipligong and Kala Bhairava at the ceremony.

“This Is A Life” from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will be performed by Scottish singer David Byrne, American band Son Lux and American actress Stephanie Hsu, while “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman will be performed by American songwriter Diane Warren and American actress Sofia Carson.

Lady Gaga will not perform, though her song “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick is the fifth nominated artwork in the category. Lady Gaga is attending the ceremony though, so fans are hoping she will give a surprise performance.

Elsewhere, American songwriter Lenny Kravitz will perform during the In Memoriam segment, which pays homage to figures in the acting field who have passed away over the past year.

Why are the Oscars called by this name?

Officially, this ceremony is the Academy Awards, but it has been known as the Academy Awards for decades.

There are three possible sources: One is the late American writer Sidney Skolsky, who allegedly gave the prize its title.

American actress Bette Davis claims the name derives from her noticing that the statuette’s back resembles her husband, musician Harmon Oscar Nelson.

But the most popular theory is that attributed to former Academy librarian Margaret Herrick, who declared that the golden statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar.
